Your grocery list has more or less the same items on it every week. Occasionally you will indulge by purchasing other products, but for the most part you buy the same things because you need them!

First, let’s put together a list of 8 products a household would typically buy on a weekly or bi-weekly basis, and then we’ll compare your total between two retailers.

  • Milk
  • Bread
  • Eggs
  • Coffee
  • Baby Formula
  • Shampoo
  • Body Wash
  • Laundry Detergent

Wal-Mart

We all know their pricing strategy is that of everyday low pricing (EDLP). Therefore, your bet should be to find all the items you need at lower price, but maybe not at the lowest price.

  • Neilson Skim Milk, 4L Bag: $3.97
  • Dempster’s Whole Grain Sliced Bread, 600g: $2.47
  • Great Value Large Eggs, 12 pack: $2.64
  • Maxwell House Original Roast Coffee, 925g: $9.97
  • Similac Iron-Fortified Baby Formula, 850g: $20.98
  • Dove Intensive Repair Shampoo, 355ml: $4.77
  • Dove Sensitive Skin Unscented Body Wash, 710ml: $6.97
  • Tide Original Liquid Laundry Detergent, 4.43L: $19.94

Your Total: $71.71 + tax = $81.03

Loblaw’s

As Canada’s largest grocery chain and a great PC Plus points loyalty program that spans across their other subsidiaries, they offer competitive pricing for your household grocery needs.

    • Neilson Skim Milk, 4L Bag: $3.97
    • Dempster’s Whole Grain Sliced Bread, 600g: $4.19
    • No Name Large Eggs, 12 pack: $1.99
    • Maxwell House Original Roast Coffee, 925g: $8.99
    • Similac Iron-Fortified Baby Formula, 850g: $23.99
    • Dove Intensive Repair Shampoo, 355ml: $4.49
    • Dove Sensitive Skin Unscented Body Wash, 710ml: $9.49
    • Tide Original Liquid Laundry Detergent, 4.43L: $25.99

Your Total: 83.10 + tax = $93.90

So, if you shop at Loblaws you pay almost an extra 14%.

Note: Most of the time, you can save more money by purchasing items in larger quantity. For example, if you purchase the smaller Maxwell House Original Roast coffee in the 326g container, you are paying an extra cent per gram for the same product. Likely, the price of some of these products will fluctuate at either retailer depending on if they are on sale this week or the next.

What we’d also like to point out is that comparing prices and searching for “our grocery list” items online only took 30 minutes. We could have then purchased them all. We don’t know about you, but when the Penguin Pick-Up team goes grocery shopping it is almost a day affair. Most of the time, we go through grocery flyers, spend time comparing prices in-store and between retailers. Because when it comes down to it, all of these products are the same, and we will always choose the product that is less expensive. But we’re also saving on time with our online purchases. No more spending an hour in the grocery store going through the isles just for the sake of comparing prices. Using Penguin Pick-Up as your pick up point couldn’t be any easier.
