5 Things to do in Toronto

On a gorgeous day, nobody wants to be inside. The good thing is that there is always something to do in Toronto! Whether you catch a Jays game, or take a walk on Queen Street West, there is so much to see, and so much to experience. Penguin Pick-Up recognizes that although we all have busy schedules, family is important. Without further ado, here are 5 very different things you can experience with your children!

1. Toronto Island Park

To get there, you must first take a ferry. The ride is only about 5 minutes long, with a beautiful skyline view of the city. Once you’re there, you can grab a bite to eat, the kids can play in the park, and you can enjoy a wonderful afternoon outdoors. There is even a water park in Centre Ville that your kids can enjoy on a hot summer day. You may relax and soak up the sun or your family can ride/walk the many trails (the ferry allows bikes).

2. Mac and Cheese Festival

Cheesy-gooey goodness! This event will be taking place from June 5th– June 7th held in the Liberty Market. The fact that you have the option to go 3 times, on 3 separate days alone, is exciting! Admission is free, and the food will be accompanied with live music, and other entertainment as well. To name a few, vendors will include Locus 144, Burrito Burrito, Cheesewerks and Art of Food. Thankfully, there will be a variety of craft brewers present to fill all of your ale needs. Mac and Cheese has always been a classic comfort food choice and they are reinventing it for you and your family to enjoy!

3. Toronto International Circus Festival

This too is a 3 day festival and it happens to fall on the long weekend (May 16th – May 18th) if you’re not already going anywhere North, South, East or West! HarbourKIDS will be hosting this festival at the Harbourfront Centre and just like our comfort food festival, will be FREE! Featured will be acrobats, daredevils, buskers and more. Typically, this event is great for children under 12.

The Toronto International Circus Festival’s website can provide you with the full schedule.

4. Solar Observing

Once a month from February until December you and your children can safely observe the sun through specially filtered telescopes. Like visiting Toronto Island park, this event is weather permitting. In the event of cloud cover, the program is rescheduled to the following Saturday. Sessions are hosted by the Ontario Science Centre  are between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m., and gives your kids the opportunity to learn about the closest star to the earth. The program will cost $13-$16 per child, and $22 per adult.

5. The Junction Summer Solstice Festival

This is the first summer festival of the year and it is dedicated to celebrating the longest day of the year – June 20th 2015. The festival will take place from Noon until midnight with free admission. You can expect family friendly shows and workshops that exemplify DIY culture, design, music and art. The Junction is an area that has a passion for a healthy lifestyle, and a love for fresh food. Therefore, there will be a green-powered Ferris Wheel too! If you happen to have the evening to yourself without the kids, you will be able to enjoy the lively nightlife magic of West Toronto.

Make sure to mark your calendar for some of the events listed above. It can be a great summer with many “firsts”. There doesn’t have to be a first for everything, but doing things you’ve never done before can be a great way to spice up your family life! You’re welcome!
